Required Assignments: Optional tutorials

1st Quarter wrap up:

You will have the rest of the 9 weeks to work on the following assignments. It is CRUCIAL that you save things in the right places and with right names. I will NOT grade items if I can't find them. I HIGHLY recommend that you check in with me before the end of the 9 weeks. You may see me during class, English class in the computer lab, study hall or lunch/recess.

You have the following assignments:

Assignment points percentage maximum weight total points
The Gwigle Game /12 % x1 _______
Britannica? Wiki? What? /33 % x2 _______
Website Icon p1 /15 % x1 _______
Website Icon p2 /15 % x1 _______
Website Layout /12 % x1 _______
Website Icon p3/Layout /27 % x2 _______
      total: _______
        /8
      final grade _______

Your printed assignments, Britannica? Wiki? What? and Website Layout should be in your manilla file folders in the computer lab.

By the end of the 9 weeks, you need 2 folders in the TOP LEVEL of your folder: computer & website. Do not capitalize!! You may have MORE items in the folders, but you must be organized. You may either resave and rename your files, or click and drag them to move them between folders.

In your computer folder you need to have gwigle.doc, icon.png, icon.gif, iconp2.png, iconp2.gif.

Your website folder needs to have index.htm and the images folder.

Your images folder needs to have all .gif files for your website and a folder called working for all .png files.

Assignment: Website Icons part 3/ Website Layout Dreamweaver *required

  2. Copy 1 image.

  4. Click okay (do not change the size).
  5. Paste image.
  6. Go to File> Image Preview.
  7. Choose Format: GIF
  8. Click Export
  9. ****Before you hit save you must do this step**** Create a new folder within your folder by clicking on the create new folder button.. It should be only one level down. Name this folder website- no capitals. Inside of this website folder create another folder. It should be named images. Inside of this images folder create another folder named working.
  10. Export all .gif files to the images folder. Save all .png files to the working folder.
  11. Name your first file icon1. You may use another name ONLY if you check with me first.

  13. Save each of these files into the working folders.

Using the paper and pencil plan from last week, draw lines that will separate the content so that each graphic will have its own cell in a table. You may plan to use tables within tables to organize some of the information.

Open Dreamweaver. Create new HTML document. Click on Insert > Table

Your # of columns/rows will depend upon your template. Choose Table Width 100%. Border thickness= 0 Leave the other responses blank.

Using the gifs that you exported into your images folder, begin placing your images within your cells.

To insert images go to Insert> Image. Browse to folder website>images and choose the appropriate file.

You may need to create new .gif files to populate your design.

Please note the following hints:

  • You may resize the objects in either Fireworks or Dreamweaver.
  • Alignment matters
  • You can export gifs so that the background is transparent. Note that when you do this, sometimes there is an imperfect white halo around the graphic.
  • You may change the background color of your webpage or use an image, but your text MUST be readable.
When you are done, save your work within the website folder inside of your folder. Name it index.

Middle School Grading Policy:

Middle School Technology Grading Policy:

This year we will be using a new grading system in technology class. This system will used to assess all assignments, whether required or optional. Certain assignments will be mandatory and have more structured deadlines and requirements, while other assignments will be created through individual student/teacher agreements. All assignments will require a reflection piece, most likely in written form.  The following rubric items will be used in the majority of assignments, but may be modified, abbreviated or expanded depending on individual projects throughout the year.

Quarter grades will be calculated based upon the weighted grand totals of all completed projects. Weighted totals will be determined by the number of weeks that the assignment takes; this may vary according to type of assignment, student mastery, or type of goals. Certain assignments may have a limit to the number of weeks for which credit can be received. Students will not be penalized for excused absences. Here are some examples:

Joey completes 5 assignments over the quarter, which had 9 weeks. One assignment took 4 weeks; the rest took 1 each. Joey missed one computer class during the 9 weeks. Joey’s grade calculation would look like this:

A1+A1+A1+A1+A2+A3+A4+A5/8

Sally completes 2 assignments over quarter, which had 9 weeks. “Assignment 1” took 4 weeks; the other took 5 weeks. “Assignment 1” could only be used for 2 weeks worth of work. Sally had no absences.

A1+A1+0+0+A2+A2+A2+A2+A2/9

You can choose to do long or short assignments, but you must do required assignments, and you must do certain assignments in a timely manner.

At the end of each class period, you must record the following information about your day’s work.

  • Date:
  • Assignment:
  • *Specific* Tasks Completed
  • Questions for Miss Dolly
  • Behavior self check (0-3, 3 being the best)
  • Explanation of behavior self check value

This is not your reflection piece. If this is not completed in a timely manner (usually during class, but sometimes within 1-2 days of class), you will not receive credit for that week’s work.

Terms:

template: A document or file having a preset format, used as a starting point for a particular application so that the format does not have to be recreated each time it is used (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/template). In this case, I would like you to the organization of your website as it might appear under the majority of your webpages.
