Information for Visitors and Prospective Parents

Admissions

How are children chosen for admission?

At Peabody School, we use a variety of criteria to identify children who are likely to benefit from our program. We seek children who demonstrate intellectual ability and/or advanced capability in specific academic areas. We rely on reports from parents and teachers and the results of one or more standardized instruments as evidence of each applicant's particular abilities.

What is the application process?

Eligibility

Children who will be at least 4 years 6 months by September 1 and who have attended preschool and/or daycare are eligible to apply for admission to the Kindergarten class. Rising first through eighth graders may apply for admission to the appropriate class.

Application

Parents may call the school's office (434-296-6901) or send an email to bpavlick@peabodyschool.org to request an application and school informational materials.

Evaluation

Based on a thorough review of all information received, students will be selected for Peabody School's classes. Parents will be notified as soon as a decision has been made.

torch logoFinancial Aid

Peabody School is committed to providing an enriched educational experience for intellectually advanced children from all economic backgrounds. It is our goal that any student who is qualified to attend and who would benefit from the educational experience the school provides will be able to attend. While we intend to provide tuition assistance to as many qualifying families as possible, we believe that the primary responsibility for financing a student's independent school education rests with his or her family. Consequently, we expect families who require tuition assistance to turn to all possible outside sources including extended family before applying for financial aid. Please keep in mind that Peabody School receives no external financial support of any kind. So, any tuition assistance provided results in less money in the budget for classroom equipment, supplies, computers, teachers' salaries, etc.

Families requesting financial aid must submit a completed Parents Financial Statement to the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS) by April 1. Families must also submit a signed copy of their most recent tax return along with all schedules to the school on or before April 1.

Once the school receives SSS's assessment of each family's ability to pay for private education, Peabody makes the final determination of any tuition reduction using SSS's recommendations as guidelines. It is important for families to understand that when determining tuition reduction amounts, the school must weigh each family's need relative to all other families applying for financial aid. While we will make every effort to meet the demonstrated need of all admitted or enrolled financial aid applicants, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.

Peabody School does not discriminate in the administration of its financial aid policies because of race, color, religion, national origin, or gender. Financial need is not considered in determining a student's eligibility for admission. We hope this overview gives you some insight into our thinking here at Peabody regarding financial aid, and we look forward to working with you on an individual basis.

torch logoFAQ

What is the application deadline?

In order to be considered for admissions in the first round, applications for kindergarten are due on February 1st of each year. In the event that the class is not filled in the first round of the admissions process, applications are considered on a rolling basis.

In the event that there are more students who are qualified for admission than there are spaces available, those students not admitted will be offered a spot on the waiting list.

Does Peabody offer foreign language?

Currently, all students in grades K-4 take French.  In grades 5-8, students may choose to take Spanish or French.

Why doesn't Peabody teach Latin?

While Latin isn't taught as a separate course at Peabody, it is part of the language arts curriculum beginning in the Lower School and continuing as a more prominent feature of the Middle School curriculum. The reason that people usually give for wanting Latin to be taught in the schools is that it is very helpful in developing a rich vocabulary. To accomplish this, Peabody has incorporated the study of Latin (as well as Greek) roots and stems into its vocabulary program. Learning the meaning of hundreds of roots and stems during their careers at Peabody has helped our students and graduates develop extensive vocabularies that they are able to call upon when reading difficult material, when writing academic papers, when learning the specialized vocabulary of the various sciences, and when taking standardized tests such as the SATs.

How many students are in each class?

While the number of students varies somewhat from class to class and from year to year depending upon the specific needs of each particular class, the following can be used as guidelines:

Kindergarten usually consists of twelve students. All other classes serve a maximum of sixteen students.
